About Us

Our Story

The Swim Clinic had an organic beginning. After welcoming our 4th baby and having just purchased a home with a pool, my husband and I began to realize the overwhelming fear and responsibility that comes with having a child who cannot swim.

When considering various swim schools, we quickly determined a group setting would not be the best fit to get the fast results we wanted. We researched and spoke with several parents who had completed Infant Swimming Resource (ISR), and concluded it was not the swimming experience we wanted for our child. I felt like, I, as his mother, and an experienced swim coach, could provide him with a safer, happier, and more effective swimming experience than all other options. When friends began to approach me about lessons for their children, I kept hearing similar stories about spending months at a swim school with little to no progress, or children traumatized and now fearful after ISR classes. Using my combined experience as a swim coach and speech therapist, I focus on providing a therapeutic, fun, rewarding, and positive swimming experience.

The Swim Clinic was built on referrals, and friends became happy clients. We offer unique and individualized swim lessons for all ages and swim levels. The Swim Clinic provides affordable private swim lessons with knowledgeable coaches who use a child led approach with younger populations. Additionally, therapy strategies such as modeling, self-talk, positive reinforcers, and redirection, are implemented to encourage and shape targeted swimming behavior outcomes. Watching children who are initially fearful of swimming learn to love the water is rewarding for both coaches and parents.

We invite you and your family to be part of this story we are still writing. Drownings are preventable, and our mission is to equip swimmers and their families with the tools they need to enjoy a lifetime of safe and positive swimming experiences.

She made finals every year in all her events at High School state and placed top 3 in multiple individual events. Coach Shawna is a highly trained, D1 collegiate swimmer and athletic scholarship recipient. She still holds top 10 records in 200 Fly, 500 Free, 400 IM, and 1,000 Free at Florida Atlantic University where she was part of the winning Sunbelt Conference Team 2 years in a row.

Coach Shawna has coached and taught hundreds of children to swim for 15 summer seasons. Swimming has always been her passion and she loves sharing this sport with others. As a licensed speech-language pathologist with over 10 years of experience, she is an expert in providing therapeutic intervention to children and adults with disabilities. Coach Shawna utilizes her therapist’s skills to shape positive swimming experiences and get quick results. She specializes in communication and creating focused activities to fit each individual’s needs. She takes a wholistic approach to teaching and centers lessons around swimmers’ abilities instead of their weaknesses.

Our Client Experience

why the swim clinic family continues to grow

“We did lessons elsewhere for two summers and my daughter made little progress. Shawna had her water safe and swimming in days! She’s incredible with the kids and is the perfect combination of fun, encouraging, and motivating while still pushing past fears. It’s obvious this is a true passion of hers.”

“Shawna is the best!! We had a terrible experience with a larger swim school and paid a lot of money for nothing at the end. As soon as I switched to her we started seeing progress. She is really good with kids that are nervous and fearful of water. She makes the process fun (so important for kids!) to build trust, focuses on safety and helps them build skills to feel confident in swimming. can't wait to take my kids to the pool this summer all because of her ”

“Shawna is such a great instructor. She's so good with kids and the progressI've seen with her teaching my daughter is lightning fast compared to lessons at a standard swim school. Highly recommend!”

“My daughter had her first swim lesson with Ms Shawna last week (she’s 4). In only 30 mins she was swimming without a floatie, blowing bubbles and wearing goggles, none of which she’d done before. It was amazing! On the way home she said ‘Mommy Ms Shawna is great!’ And she’s been asking all day to go back so that speaks volumes!”

Harriet Brown
Parent

“My son was previously going to a swim school in the area and we recently took him out because we were not seeing progress. In 3 lessons with Shawna my 5-year-old has started swimming with confidence and learning techniques he hasn’t learned in almost a year of swim school! We are amazed by the progress we are seeing and would recommend her to anyone who wants to put their child in swim. My son looks forward to hislessons with Ms. Shawna every week!”

Lauren Davis

“My 3 yr old has been swimming with Shawna for several weeks now and I have seen improved confidence, desire to test new boundaries, comfort in the water and she is more consistently going under and swimming small distances on her own. Shawna has been able to quickly build trust and helps my girl to focus through play so she can make progress. We appreciate Shawna’s patience and genuine affection. Highly recommend!”

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I stay on deck during my child’s lesson?

For multiple reasons, you may not stay on deck during the swimmer’s lesson.  It is safest for parents/ siblings, and everyone who is not in the water swimming to wait in the lobby.  You are invited to wait and observe the lesson in the lobby.

Do I (parent) have to get in the water with my child?

Parents only need to get in the water for the Water Babies class.  All private and group lessons are swimmers only in the pool.

Will my swimmer have the same coach each day?

Swimmers will be scheduled with the same coach for group lessons.  For private lessons as well as the Foundational Swim Course, you choose your instructor when you sign up.  Keep in mind, in the event of an emergency/ instructor illness, we will either provide a sub or schedule a make-up.

Do you teach infant survival?

No.  ISR is not a service we provide.  If your child has completed ISR and now needs to learn to swim, then the Foundational Swim Course is the best class for them.

My child can already swim, but needs to work on strokes. Do you teach strokes and technique?

Yes. We provide instruction for all swim levels, beginner and advanced.

I am having trouble booking, can you help?

Absolutely! Email us and we will help you book.

I want to do the Foundational Swim Course but cannot attend all of the sessions, should I still sign up?

No.  The Foundational Swim Course works best when swimmers attend all lessons within the 2 weeks. These courses are offered monthly and you can schedule in advance.

I’m worried if we do lessons in the Fall or Winter my swimmer will forget how to swim. Should I wait until spring or summer to sign up for lessons?

Definitely not. Swimming requires muscle memory.  Your child will not forget how to swim.  They may need a confidence boost or a few lessons to build back endurance, but learning to swim in the off season is highly recommended.

I have multiple children. How do I schedule back-to-back lessons?

If you are scheduling more than one swimmer for lessons, you can schedule a 30- or 45-minute sibling group.  Duration depends on swimmers’ ages and levels.  You should speak with an instructor to determine the best option.  If you are scheduling siblings for the Foundational Swim Course and cannot find back-to-back slots, reach out to an instructor and we will do our best to facilitate.

What should we wear and bring to swim lessons?

Please wear a tight-fitting swim suit and have long hair pulled back out of the swimmer's face.  Bring a towel, water shoes, goggles, and water bottle.  No jewelry, snorkel masks, nose plugs, or baggy swimsuits please.

What type of goggles should we buy?

The Swim Clinic highly recommends the Speedo Vanquisher goggles.  These goggles fit everyone well and do not leak which saves us time during our lessons. If you are not sure which size to buy, you may purchase them on site directly from us.  We have fun colors swimmers can choose from and we will help size them for you.
